Available Franchise Opportunities in Ohio

Lawn Doctor is currently offering franchising opportunities in most major areas of Ohio, including multiple territories in Cleveland. If you are considering opening a Lawn Doctor franchise in Ohio, but aren’t familiar with the demographics and culture of the territory you’re considering, we’ve gathered some information to give you a start as you research each area.

Cleveland (Multiple Territories Available)

Wondering where to find profitable Cleveland businesses for sale? Cleveland is the second largest city in the state (Columbus is the largest). And due to the high population, we have several home-based lawn care franchise opportunities in Cleveland, OH right now. Situated on the shore of Lake Erie, the city is popular among young professionals, with 37 percent of the population between 18 and 44 years old.

Cleveland is home to several of Ohio’s premiere sports teams, including the Indians (MLB), the Browns (NFL), and the 2016 NBA champions, the Cavaliers. The city is also home to several cultural attractions, such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cleveland is also celebrated as the “birthplace of Superman,” as Jerry Siegel was living in the city when he first invented the superhero.

Toledo

Located about a two-hour drive west of Cleveland, Toledo has earned the nickname “The Glass City,” due to its flourishing glass industry. If you’re looking for franchise opportunities in Toledo, OH, Lawn Doctor is a great choice.

Toledo is the fourth largest city in Ohio, in terms of population, following Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. Approximately 39 percent of the city’s population is between the ages of 18 and 44 years old.

The majority of Toledo’s economy is based around the glass and automotive industries. Many Fortune 500 companies in the automotive and related industries have their headquarters in Toledo, including Jeep. There are also two Jeep production facilities in the Toledo metropolitan area—one in the city itself, and another in Perrysburg, a suburb of Toledo.

Akron

Originally founded at the high point of the Ohio and Erie Canal (which was then under construction), Akron served as an important stop for trade routes. Since its founding, Akron has grown to be the fifth-largest city in Ohio. Located only 40 miles south of Cleveland, Akron’s economy is largely dominated by the polymer industry. At the center of what has been termed Ohio’s “Polymer Valley,” Akron houses 45 percent of the polymer production in the state. With such a bustling economy, the franchise opportunities in Akron, OH are full of possibilities.

Culturally speaking, Akron has three performance halls, the Lock 3 Park amphitheater, and the Akron Art Museum, among others. It’s also the birthplace of the Empire Barley Mill and German Mills American Oatmeal Company, two organizations that would later merge to form Quaker Oats.

Lima

Even though it’s not quite as big as Cincinnati and Cleveland, there are still plenty of franchise opportunities in Lima, OH. Located right around the midway point between Toledo and Dayton, Lima’s economy relies largely on the Lima Army Tank Plant, the only facility that produces the M1 Abrams tank. Lima is also the setting of the retired smash hit TV show, Glee.

Canton

Canton was originally a heavy manufacturing center for Ohio, due to its proximity to so many railroad lines. As the city’s manufacturing industry declined, however, it made way for several forays into a service economy, particularly in areas such as healthcare, finance, and education. As such, there are several franchise opportunities in Canton, OH for potential Lawn Doctor franchisees to consider.

Youngstown

Located on the eastern edge of Ohio, Youngstown is often used in filming to depict areas in both Northeastern Ohio and the Pittsburgh Tri-State Area. There are several franchise opportunities in Youngstown, OH.

Powers Auditorium, which used to be a Warner Brothers movie palace, now serves as the cultural center of the city and home of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. The town is only 10 miles from the Pennsylvania state line and serves as the midpoint between New York City and Chicago on Interstate 80.

Dayton/Springfield

Dayton and Springfield are located only 26 miles apart. Lawn Doctor’s franchise opportunities in Dayton/Springfield, OH are combined within a single territory, offering franchisees two populations from which to pull potential customers.

Springfield was actually named after the city of Springfield, MO, while Dayton was named for Captain Jonathan Dayton, a soldier in the American Revolutionary War and an important landowner in the area.

Success Stories

In the preceding decades, hundreds of Lawn Doctor franchisees have been able to build  successful, satisfying businesses. Here are just a few examples:

Nick Mangiardi

Nick Mangiardi had worked in a business with his father and brothers since the 1970s when the family decided it was time to sell off their equipment and other assets—but Nick wasn’t quite ready to retire. That’s when he realized a Lawn Doctor franchise opportunity was the perfect solution to keep himself busy and continue to add to his retirement savings.

Tom Norton

Tom Norton was in high school in the late ‘80s when his father decided it was time to build a family business. Norton’s father wanted a business that would allow him to work alongside his sons. Since that time, the business has passed into Tom’s hands and continued to grow significantly.

They will show you how to improve your business, develop new skills, and streamline your work process.

Ongoing Training and Support

Even after you have completed your first two years of operation, you will receive training and support from our national office. Additional training comes in a variety of formats:

  • Regional business meetings every quarter
  • Our annual Lawn Doctor National Conference
  • Webinars posted online
  • An e-learning platform with 24 hour access
  • Turf field days

About Lawn Doctor

Lawn Doctor traces its roots back to a New Jersey housing boom in the early-to-mid 1960s, as suburban areas grew at a rapid pace. Lawn Doctor’s founder, Tony Giordano, owned a hardware store in the town of Matawan, and he noticed that homeowners were regularly coming into his store seeking both products and advice on how to keep their lawns green and healthy.

In an attempt to address these common questions, Giordano began holding free lectures in his store on weekends. In these lectures, he taught basic lawn care techniques and methods. His lectures were so effective, and so popular, that soon the crowds of people who wanted to attend could not be contained inside his store.

In 1965, Tony Giordano recognized a business opportunity. While the homeowners attending his class were happy to learn better ways to keep their lawns and gardens healthy, many would be just as happy, if not more so, to hire someone to come and do things for them. They felt more comfortable knowing that an experienced professional was doing things the right way.

In 1966, Tony partnered with a friend of his, Bob Magda, an engineer. Magda used his engineering experience to develop and build Lawn Doctor’s very first piece of proprietary equipment, and set themselves apart from other lawn care providers. Armed with this new equipment and their knowledge of the lawn care business, the two entrepreneurs started Auto-Lawn, the precursor to Lawn Doctor.

By the next year, Auto-Lawn had grown enough that Magda and Giordano decided to expand the business by franchising their lawn care systems and equipment. They knew that they were offering superior service, and that they could leverage their proprietary equipment to effectively grow the business. It was at this point that they changed the name of their company to Lawn Doctor, after a local newspaper article referred to the two as “the lawn doctors.” The name stuck, and they adopted it as the official name of their company.

Tony Giordano served as president and CEO of Lawn Doctor until his death in 1983. Shortly thereafter, Russell Frith was named as the new president and CEO. Frith continued to advance and grow the company, eventually making it one of the most successful franchise businesses in the US. In 2011, he retired from Lawn Doctor, and Scott Frith subsequently took over as CEO. Since then, the company has focused on developing new innovations and employing strategic planning and performance improvement initiatives to accomplish Lawn Doctor’s long-term goals for the system.

Since the mid-1960s, Lawn Doctor has been providing homeowners with top-quality lawn care service. For the past 50+ years, we have been intent on making our customers’ lawns lush and healthy. With each passing year, we continue to develop and hone our products and services to stay ahead of the competition.
